- Comments: Segregation fuels ignorance. Ignorance fuels fear. Fear fuels racism. Racism fuels segregation. . .and so on and so on. Instead of viewing metropolitan Detroit as one community, many people have an us-and-them attitude. People feel that our "group" is fine but their "group" is a problem. Segregation, even by choice, limits our "free-will" decisions, and hurts everyone.

- Comments: I dunno if segregation does anything bad or good. I think most people like to stick to their own race as you have much in common, same likes and dislikes, common ideas and likes in food and music. I noticed at work at lunch time the whites sit together at one table, blacks at another, yet people are free to sit where they wish. I noticed that even in sports the blacks seem to stay with other blacks and whites the same. People with common backgrounds just like to be with others with the same. People from other cultures 'round the globe think differantly.

- Comments: In regards to your question posted on Monday, January 14th (Does segregation hurt whites?), my answer is yes, of course it does. Any group of people loses out when it doesn't have the opportunity to learn from others.
When people of different races or backgrounds don't live together, black, white, or otherwise, they miss out on the ability to see what things are like for others. The ability to truly empathize with others is something that is sorely lacking everywhere, not just in the Metro Detroit area. When all people learn to see and try to understand things from another's point of view, we will all be better off.

- Comments: Absolutely, Whites are greatly affected by segregation, maybe not financially...but they are affected educationally, emotionally, and spiritually. They don't even realize the beauty that lies within each individual African American living in the city of Detroit because they have lumped and prejudge. We all have a wealth of knowledge to share....and if I am not correct.....I don't think any human - being on this earth has a pure blood line!!!!

blacks feel the same way. We are different
people with different cultures. We do not mix
well. I am happy to different and hope that
they feel the same way. Intergratation is not going to happen. Ever. The government can force it but most whites will just move to be around their own kind. I would hope that blacks feel the same way.

- Comments: Much of the fear that exist today is due to a lack of knowledge. I worked in Metro Detroit before moving to Atlanta and never had any problems getting along the (white) residents there. Anyone (blacks) who can move to the burbs, feel the same way as anyone else. My goodness its 2002, get over it already!!!

- Comments: The reason I said it hurts whites is simply a matter of personal enrichment. There will always
be ignorance.Whites will not lose any power, the
power will remain with the powerful.
What happens to blacks, which is very devastating,is that blacks
fail to dream big dreams and look forward to the
American dream. There is huge apathy here.Blacks have systematically been left out of the promise of America. We have tried to move forward as an
individual, when historians can attest to the fact that we must move together as a group or a community. We were a race before we were a community. The ecomonic competition is speared by
race.Until we whole hearted and for the first time, admit that race means everything in America.
You can always point to some baseball or basketball player or rap star making huge dollars
in America. However,Oprah Winfrey,Bill Cosby,Jim Brown and Michael Jordan, could not buy CBS.As dominant as the NBA and the NFL with black atheletes, there is no black ownership. In America, where the wealth was achieved through slavery. That's no wages no benefits. Our pass has
a major impact on our ability to move forward freely, unrestricted, and judged as individuals and
not as a group. We want the same things that whites
want.Freedom and Equal Opportunity. ray norman

- Comments: Segregation hurts whites by keeping their world insular and unenlightened to the greater realities of the world. Narrowness has never been an attractive attribute in anything but race and prejudice.
If hiring a candidate for a job, in almost every case a greater and wider range of experience in a given field makes the candidate more qualified for a position. Lets consider race relations the requisite experience for the job of being a human being.

- Comments: Segregation breeds fear, ignorance and insularity. It is psychologically, emotionally and economically crippling to everyone in a segregated environment. It inhibits personal emotional growth and maturity and intellectual growth and skill development.Depending on the degree of fear and insularity, the conduct of one's daily life is sharply constricted by concerns which have as their foundation a fear of "others."
The consequences include an inability to learn and grow affecting educational performance and job performance and a general inability to function in the wider world.Segregation fosters self-victimization and paranoia by those who believe and practice it and contributes greatly to the deterioration of the mental health not only of it's intended victims, but of its proponents. Segregation is not only inherently immoral, it is impractical and fosters fragmentation of the social fabric when cohesion is not only desirable, but critical to an ordered society. It is a deliberate distraction from important issues which must be addressed which affect the lives of all citizens in a community. It is antithetical to democratic principles. It has no place in any civilized society, It has no place in this country in this century.

- Comments: Living a self imposed segregated life is often rooted in fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of the media stereotypes, fear of moving out of one's comfort zone. Segregation cripples the mind and the spirit resulting in people living limited and stifling life styles (i.e.: don't go to the city, don't talk to those people). It causes people to miss out on the riches that all ethnic groups bring to the table of life.
In work situations Whites/European Americans that have segregated themselves from ethnic groups such as Middle Easterners, African Americans, Latinos, often find themselves unable to: communicate, be supervised, or follow directions from people that don't look like them. People who segregate no matter what the color also find it harder to adapt to change. Segregation provides a false sense of security that one is "large and in charge" and when that myth is hatred is often devastating. People fight to hold onto those old ways, they join groups that support their belief and they move to different geographical areas to maintain the feeling of those old days of segregation.

- Comments: No segregation does not hurt whites. Number one everything that they need is in their community and they control the economics of their community. They spend with one another which means the money stays in house-better schools homes recreation larger tax base. They don't get redlined like Detroit.Better rates because of their skin color. So when you are the previlege group and your not depending on some one else it does not hurt.

- Comments: Of course it hurts whites. Segregation keeps whites miseducated about blacks (or any other group)by its very definition of keeping whites only among whites. How can one eradicate the ignorance of the other group if they do not share the same space with one another? That's like trying to get to know your own child but he/she does not live with you. Sure, you may know some surface data, but only in close quarters, sharing a neighborhood, a school bus, a classroom, or a cup of coffee-can we really get to know each other.

- Comments: Segregation hurts everyone. I grew up in a neighborhood with nothing but whites, so when the real world came it took me a while to be able to work and socialize with other races. I have since gotten used to everyone but I believe if I had been around every race as a child I would not notice race at all, and that is the best way to be.
