- Comments: I orginally
grew up in Birmangham and went to Birmingham schools, untill my
freshman year when I transfered to Ferndale High School. I feel
segregation hurts white people because they are unaware of were
Black people are coming from. Before I went to Ferndale, I always
thought Black and White people were the same with no differences.
Untill I went to Ferndale were I learned that there is a cultural
difference. Which when I talk to people of my age that have never
had my experience, I hear a lot of comments such as why dont they
move, they make it like that, they can get out if they want. Not
understanding that these people are held down, buy society.
I must say the education at Birmingham was much higher of a
standard. As I get older though I realize the chance to experience
diversity was much better, and something I would rather have my
child experience. It makes easier for me to understand people, and
other cultures.

- Comments: Sociologically and culturally, segregation allows whites to
continue to live under the misguided perception that people are
not equal. Blacks in Metro Detroit, for the most part live in
deteriorating conditions while whites live in visibly better
circumstances. Even some of the lower income pockets of white
suburbia offer significantly better living conditions than blacks
enjoy.
Many whites will allow themselves to believe that it is a
matter of due privilege based on racial status. For this nation to
narrow the racial chasm, whites must acknowledge the notion of
human equality. They must see American culture for what it is, a
decaying relic.
To revitalize our economy, our culture, and our future as the
world's leader, we must endeavor to embrace our commonality and
celebrate our diversity.
By the same token, the black culture must live by the same
rules. For integration to be successful, blacks, whites and others
must agree to some common cultural ground. Not only are we living
in separate communities in segregated areas, but we are living in
separate cultures with distinctly different values and norms.
Until we can agree on an American culture, divisions will grow.
Divisions are good for no one. Look at what is happening in the
world around us. Racial and religious divisions are destroying
many of our international neighbors. If we are unable to live
together, our future faces further decay and eventual
downfall.

segregation doesn't hurt whites. What no one has considered is
that the main reason for segregation is that Detroit is a zoo.
Most of the whites (my family and friends included) got out of
there because of the crime and decreasing property values. Most
people didn't leave because their neighbors were black, they left
because the city was a zoo.
I am white and some of my best friends from the old hood were
black. I am no racist either. Most of the serious crimes in
Detroit(murder, rape, car jackings) are caused by African
Americans. So whites got away from the city because most of the
crimes were caused by blacks and unfortunately that is what has
led to most of the segregation in my opinion.
If blacks are law abiding and good citizens, they are welcome
anywhere in my book. Civil rights leaders should focus on the
black criminal element and not cry racism when something
controversial happens against African Americans.

segregation has hurt whites is that it limits the opportunity for
them to understand blacks.

- Comments: I think it
hurt's whites because they truly miss out on learning and
understanding different cultures especially those of Blacks, whom
they have to interact with mostly at work and in school. The one's
who are affected the most are the children and young people, they
have no sense of what other races or cultures are all about. It
makes for a pretty narrow view of the real world. It also foster
the mistrust and misunderstanding of people of different races.
This is why so many people make stupid comments about other
races or don't try to get to know other people of other races
becasue they have always live sperately and they don't feel the
need to change now. In the long run we are all hurt by segragation
both white and black.

- Comments: I don't think
segregation hurts whites because whites are statistically better
off than blacks as far as income, education and housing. I also
believe that whites are better financial planners than blacks,
thus causing them to benefit more than blacks.

segregation comes a need for special help for
minorities"affimative action and other special help" it hurts
whites by giving away jobs to people, affectly taking them away
from somebody else also City's surrounding those that are not
doing well have to pay in crime, drugs , even death.
God help those americans who get nothing handed to them and
still have to compete in a declining economy. Our system is a ever
spinning downward mess.
Remember who told you 3/4's of welfare fuels the fire which
eventually brings us down

- Comments: I believe
there is a premium whites pay in terms of higher rent, cost of
homes, etc. for the priviledge of living apart from blacks. In
addition:
- White adults and their children lack understanding and
insights regarding people who are different and are less tolerant
of race and other diversity factors than those who live in a more
integrated community.
- Those who earn higher wages pay for those who are deprived of
quality education, healthcare, and other things that contribute to
people being poor.
- People who have a shot at life's offerings are less likely to
get into trouble than those who have nothing to lose.
- White organizations who do not embrace diversity miss out on
the talent and gifts people or color have to offer when race is a
factor in the hiring and promotion of their staff.

that white Americans have looted over the centuries has insulated
them from the problems they have created for other races.
Segregation is the same as apartheid and history shows the
oppressed usually have to break a few windows before the
oppressers realize the extent of their selfishness.

- Comments: Since Blacks
commit most of the violent crime in this country (see Duke.com
"The Color of Crime"), and use welfare and social programs far
beyond their population, it is not surprising that most White
people are in favor of segregation. Otherwise, "White flight"
would not be the biggest factor in the American housing market
today.
Besides, as much as the average Negro hates White Americans,
why would anyone want to subject themselves to all of the hatred
Whites face living in non-White areas?

know is why does integration have to be forced down our throats? I
like living in a white neighborhood and I see nothing wrong with
that. I wish that the government and liberal organizations would
get off our backs and let us live where we want.

- Comments: Just as in
any situation, when you control and you want to impress your
essence onto what you control, you seek no input from any other
"diverse" source. This world, country, and state has been
controlled by "whites" so to the point that societal standards are
based on what they feel are right. No input from "other thans."
With that said, considering that the City of Detroit has not be
"controlled" by whites since 1971-72 their "essence" has not been,
recently, impressed upon the city, a major American city mind you,
and now segregation is a problem to the established white society
that includes governmental and business leaders as well as the
media. But, in reality, it is not.

- Comments: Segregation
hurts everyone, especially those who do not have, but who see
others as having everything. When you grow up knowing that you
already have three strikes against you, many times you don't try
and you fall by the wayside.
Contrary to many people who live outside of the city, life is
hard for a large number of poor people in Detroit. That is not to
say there are not many success stories, but the vast majority of
people are living at or below the poverty line.
Where there is poverty, there is want, where there is want,
there is crime to get what you see others have.
All people from the inner city need is a break. You can't take
all the business and industry from the inner city and expect the
people to survive. We don't have a good transportation system, the
infrastructure of the city is crumbling, and there are few jobs
available in the inner city. I know that we have a new mayor, and
hopefully, things will change. But change is going to take time,
and Detroit needs help. Detroit needs business and industry to
help those who are unemployed or underemployed.
As to the affect on those in the suburbs the affect is a moral
one. There is no difference in races. Race is not a fact, it is
only a word made up to categorize people. We are basically all the
same, whether we like to admit it or not. If one believes in God,
one knows that we all come from the same seed. God didn't make two
Adams and Eves one set in an inner city and the other in a
suburban Garden of Eden. God made only one pair. Whether we like
it or not, we are the same. Not all sisters and brothers look
alike, but that is what we are under the skin. So instead of
looking at minorities with distrust, look at them as a brother or
a sister or perhaps a potential friend.
Stereotypes of people have persisted over many centuries, but
have proven to be wrong. You can't believe things you hear, you
have to make a conscious effort to find out for yourself. Not all
people of any group or culture are good or bad, and we should not
judge all people by the deeds of some.
