Outside Funding
While general funding sources such as NSF, NIH also support research
on China, some sources supports research specially on China or Asia.
Some of them are listed here.
The Luce Foundation has an Asia Program, which promotes cultural
and intellectual exchange between the countries of the Asia-Pacific
and the United States, and provide scholarly and public resources
for improved understanding of Asia in the United States. The Asia
Program currently has three parts: the Luce Scholars Program, Asia
Project Grants, and the Luce Fund for Asian Studies. The Asia Project
Grants specifically support research on East and Southeast Asia.
The Ford Fundation has a regional office in Beijing, which provides
grants to China-related research. The Beijing Office currently considers
applications for support for the following areas:
· Development finance and economic security
· Education reform and cultural diversity
· Environment and development
· Governance and public policy
· International cooperation
· Law and rights
· NPO development
· Sexuality and reproductive health
The CSCC is a private, non-profit organization that aims to promote
mutual understanding between the people of the United States and
China by providing China-based liaison and coordination for cross-cultural
academic programs. It has programs such as Chinese Fellowships for
Scholarly Development, Chinese Public Policy Research Grants Competition,
National Program for Advanced Study and Research in China and Program
on Social Development in China. They provide grants to both Chinese
scholars and those living in the US to conduct China-related research.
The CSCC also has a Beijing office, which serves to enhance interactions
with the Chinese academic community.
