Variable Definitions for the downloaded Hispanic population files

These spreadsheets include a very large number of variables.  However, their variable names (listed in the first row) are quite easy to interpret, because they follow a simple set of rules.

The following abbreviations apply generally:

MSAPMSA=Census metro code

STATE=Census state code

Census year:

90=1990

00=2000

Level of Geography:

ST=State

MT=Full metropolitan area

CC=Central city

SB=Suburbs

The Hispanic national origin variables include an identifier for whether the data are counts from the Hispanic question as reported by the census or adjusted counts estimated by the Mumford Center:

M=Mumford Center

C=Census Hispanic question

Codes for race, ethnicity, and Hispanic national origins are as follows:

NHW=Non-Hispanic White

NHB=Non-Hispanic Black

HSP=Hispanic

ASN=Asian

MX=Mexico

PR=Puerto Rico

CB=Cuba

DM=Dominican Republic

CM=Central American  (total of all Central American origins)

CR=Costa Rica

GM=Guatemala

HN=Honduras

NC=Nicaragua

PA=Panama

SL=El Salvador

OC=Other Central America (not specified)

SM=South American (total of all South American origins)

AG=Argentina

BL=Bolivia

CI=Chile

CL=Columbia

EQ=Ecuador

PG=Paraguay

PE=Peru

UG=Uruguay

VE=Venezuela

EXAMPLES:

1.  For example, a variable named MX_M00MT would be interpreted as follows:

MX=Mexican

M=Mumford Center estimate

00=Census year 2000

MT=Full metro area

Therefore, this variable represents the Mumford Center's estimate of the number of Mexicans living in a metro area in 2000.

2.  Similarly, DM_C90ST would be the Census estimate for the number of Dominicans living in a state in 1990.
